I love that my family dentist is tech-savvy. It's so easy to book a dentist on his smartphone app if I have a tooth problem or if anyone in my family needs emergency problems (I can choose either my normal dentist or another dentist in his practise depending on availability). He also has some great cameras so that we can see exactly what is going on during treatment. I prefer not to see this, but my kids love to be able to see the dentist using his specialised tools to clean and repair their teeth. This blog has some tips on finding a tech-savvy dentist to help give your family the best possible dental care.
If you wait until you start experiencing dental pain to visit your dentist, you're putting yourself at high risk of several inconvenient consequences. First, the pain can last for days, and as you know, toothaches are one of the most uncomfortable pains. Second, toothaches would mean that a cavity has grown or worsened to the extent that it needs a root canal. But with regular checkups at the dentist, this situation can be avoided, as your dentist will perform cavity checks and cleanings before they develop into something worse.
Regular checkups from your dentists are more vital than most people imagine. Here are several reasons you need to visit your dentist regularly for checkups.
Oral Cancer Screening
Nowadays every dental checkup includes screening for oral cancer because cases of oral cancer are rising rapidly. Early detection of these cases increase the chances of survival, and this is only possible through regular teeth checkups.
Save Your Smile
Detecting tooth decay early enough can save your smile. And speaking of saving your teeth and smile, did you know one of the leading causes of tooth loss in most adults is gum disease? Having regular dental appointments will help prevent gum disease and also assist in managing any oral health issue you may be experiencing.
Spot Problems Early
After your cleaning, your dentist will conduct an examination whereby they check for cavities or other problems. Tooth decay is easier to treat when detected early. If you wait until a cavity tears into the enamel, it might inflame the pulp. From there, this infection can spread to your root canal. In extreme cases, severe decay can cause a serious bacterial infection.
Remove Tartar
Dentists are professionally trained to clean hidden and hard-to-reach areas of your mouth using specialized tools to remove plaque that might be stuck on your enamel. If allowed to build up, plaque creates tartar. And when tartar hardens, it becomes more difficult to remove. If left untreated, tartar can rapidly lead to cavities.
Regular X-rays
A crucial part of regular dental checkups is that you get your teeth and jawbone x-rayed every six months. X-ray images unearth what's happening beneath the surfaces of your mouth and can diagnose issues that may be invisible to the naked eye. Such problems can include impacted wisdom teeth, which are growing underneath but blocked from pushing through the gum. X-ray images can also pinpoint damage to your jawbone, swelling, tumours or cysts. Detecting these oral issues early will help in properly treating them.
